Comparison of Respiratory Muscle Electromyography between Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis and Healthy Subjects

Authors

Abstract:

Purpose: Scoliosis is one of the most common spinal deformities that affect chest wall mechanics. Scoliosis results in ventilator disorders and respiratory muscle weakness. However, the mechanism of these disorders is still unknown. The main objective of this study was to identify the intensity of respiratory muscles activity in patients with idiopathic scoliosis compare with healthy individuals and determine the relationship between scoliosis degree and respiratory dysfunctions. In this study, 20 female patients with adult idiopathic scoliosis (mild, moderate) as well as 10 healthy matched individuals with characteristics of the patients were selected. Methods: Electromyography values were recorded through rest phase. In addition, the electromyography values of external intercostal muscles and diaphragm were recorded bilaterally. Results: The RMS of concave and convex external intercostal muscles and concave diaphragm in patients with idiopathic scoliosis were reduced significantly relative to healthy individuals in rest (P<0.001, P<0.001, P=0.023). .There was a correlation between scoliosis degree and decrease in concave and convex intercostal muscle performances (P=0.001) but there was no correlation in diaphragm muscle. Conclusion: Respiratory muscle performance is drastically decreased in patients with adult idiopathic scoliosis. There was a relationship between scoliosis degree and respiratory dysfunction. This reduction has more observed in concave side and resulted in reduced physical capacity.

Comparison of Postural Control and Motor Control in Adolescents with Idiopathic Scoliosis and Healthy Subjects: A Short Report

Background and Objectives: Idiopathic scoliosis is one of the most common abnormalities in adolescents which can result in impaired postural and motor control. Therefore, the present study compared the postural and motor control in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis and healthy subjects. Materials and Methods: In this descriptive study, out of 79 patients referred to Tehran Rehabilitation ...

Hystological paraspinal muscle comparison between curve concavity and convexity in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis

Background Several studies have presented morphological, biochemical and histopathological changes in the paraspinal skeletal muscle of patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). Some abnormalities have been demonstrated such as an increased amount of type I fibers in the concavity and the decreased number of type II in the convexity, an increase in the intracellular concentration of ...

Biomechanical analysis and modeling of different vertebral growth patterns in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis and healthy subjects

BACKGROUND The etiology of AIS remains unclear, thus various hypotheses concerning its pathomechanism have been proposed. To date, biomechanical modeling has not been used to thoroughly study the influence of the abnormal growth profile (i.e., the growth rate of the vertebral body during the growth period) on the pathomechanism of curve progression in AIS. This study investigated the hypothesis...

Volume-based morphometry of brain MR images in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis and healthy control subjects.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a spinal deformity with unknown cause. Previous studies have suggested that subclinical neurologic abnormalities are associated with AIS. The objective of this prospective study was to characterize systematically neuroanatomic changes in patients with left thoracic AIS vs right thoracic AIS and healthy control subjects by using vol...

Cardiac and respiratory responses to exercise in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

Twenty girls, aged 11-15 years, with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis were studied before spinal fusion was performed. Each underwent a range of lung function tests and a standardised progressive exercise test on a bicycle ergometer. The resting lung function tests showed reduced peak flow rates, lung volumes, and maximum voluntary ventilation. The maximum oxygen uptake was slightly diminished b...

Respiratory muscle dysfunction and exercise limitation in patients with moderate adolescent idiopathic scoliosis

Materials and methods Case-control study in with 85 patients with AIS and 25 healthy volunteers. AIS patients were classified into two groups determined by the curve mangitude): A (Cobb angle 25-40°) and B (Cobb angle >40°). Main outcomes were: respiratory muscle strength estimated by maximal inspiratory and expiratory preassures (MIP, MEP), peripherical muscle strength assessed in hands and lo...
